Getting Started

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is a tag based language. Tags can insert information into a web page, format the data or manipulate the actions of a page. Each tag is depicted by a less than and greater than symbol - <tag>.

Some tags are container tags and some are standalone tags. An example of a container tag is the bold tag -<B>. The data within the <B> and </B> tags is set to bold .
An example of a standalone tag is the line break tag - <BR>. This tag inserts a line break wherever inserted.

The most popular method of formatting web pages is through the use of tables. Tables allow you to create a structure for your page through the use of rows and columns. This provides you the ability to align and format your information thus creating a more professional and appealing web page. There are many tags and attributes defined for the creation of tables. Most of the pages of the HTML Help Center are structured through tables.

One of the best ways to learn HTML is to view the source code of web sites you enjoy. Haven't you ever gone to a site and said to yourself, "I wonder how they did that"? If you want to know - view the source code. IE and Netscape each give you the ability to examine the code. Some web sites use frames so you must click into the frame you wish to examine and then rightclick to view the code. Steal from the best!!! Save the code and customize it to suit your purposes. Play with the code. This is the best way to truly get the feel for HTML coding. Experiment a little. Books and sites like this one are great but hands-on learning is the best method of learning.

Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) include free web site hosting as part of their service. This means you are already able to upload HTML files to the internet. Yes, everyone in the world can visit your site!
